The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucible where legends are forged, rivalries are reignited, and the future of New Japan Pro-Wrestling is shaped. On March 16th, 2025, the NJPW New Japan Cup reaches its climactic finale, and the wrestling world will be watching as the best of the best collide in a night of high-stakes action. This is not just another event; this is the culmination of weeks of grueling matches, shocking upsets, and storytelling at its finest.
As the final eight competitors step into the ring, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The winner of the New Japan Cup earns the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, and with it, the chance to etch their name in the annals of wrestling history. But beyond the championship opportunity, this is about pride, legacy, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
In this live preview, we’ll break down the key matches, analyze the storylines, and explore the potential outcomes that could redefine NJPW in 2025. From the established veterans to the rising stars, every competitor has a story to tell, and every match promises to deliver the kind of drama and excitement that only NJPW can provide.
The Final Eight: A Clash of Titans
The New Japan Cup has always been a platform for surprises, and this year’s tournament has been no exception. The final eight competitors represent a mix of NJPW’s most decorated stars and hungry newcomers looking to make their mark. Let’s take a closer look at who’s left standing and what they bring to the table.
1. Kazuchika Okada – The Rainmaker
The reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and the heart of NJPW, Kazuchika Okada, has once again proven why he’s considered one of the greatest of all time. Despite already holding the title, Okada entered the New Japan Cup to prove a point: that he is untouchable. His path to the finals has been a masterclass in in-ring psychology and technical prowess, but the question remains—can he overcome the fatigue of a grueling tournament and fend off the challengers who are gunning for his throne?
2. Tetsuya Naito – The Ungovernable One
Tetsuya Naito is a man on a mission. After a year of setbacks and injuries, Naito has returned with a vengeance, determined to reclaim his status as the top star in NJPW. His signature tranquilo demeanor masks a burning desire to prove that he’s still the best in the world. A victory in the New Japan Cup would not only earn him a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship but also solidify his legacy as one of NJPW’s all-time greats.
3. Shota Umino – The Rising Star
The son of the legendary Yuji Nagata, Shota Umino has been on a meteoric rise in recent years. With a mix of technical skill, charisma, and an undeniable connection with the fans, Umino has emerged as one of NJPW’s most promising young talents. His journey to the finals has been marked by stunning upsets and hard-fought victories, and a win here would catapult him into the main event scene.
4. Will Ospreay – The Aerial Assassin
Will Ospreay is a man who needs no introduction. Known for his breathtaking athleticism and innovative offense, Ospreay has consistently delivered show-stealing performances throughout the tournament. After a brief stint outside of NJPW, his return has been nothing short of spectacular, and a victory in the New Japan Cup would cement his status as one of the promotion’s top stars.
5. Hiroshi Tanahashi – The Ace
At 48 years old, Hiroshi Tanahashi continues to defy Father Time. The Ace of NJPW has once again proven that he can hang with the best, using his experience and ring IQ to outmaneuver younger, faster opponents. A win in the New Japan Cup would be a fitting addition to his storied career, but the question is whether he has enough left in the tank to go all the way.
6. Zack Sabre Jr. – The Technical Wizard
Zack Sabre Jr. is a master of submission wrestling, and his path to the finals has been a showcase of his unparalleled technical ability. With a knack for bending opponents into pretzels and a razor-sharp mind for strategy, Sabre is a dangerous opponent for anyone. If he can outthink and outmaneuver the competition, he could very well walk away with the New Japan Cup.
7. Jeff Cobb – The Imperial Unit
Jeff Cobb is a force of nature. With his incredible strength and agility, Cobb has bulldozed his way through the tournament, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. A win in the New Japan Cup would be the crowning achievement of his career, and with his combination of power and speed, he has the tools to make it happen.
8. Great-O-Khan – The Dominator
The most unpredictable and enigmatic competitor in the finals, Great-O-Khan has used his unorthodox style and mind games to unsettle his opponents. A win for O-Khan would be a major upset, but in the world of NJPW, anything can happen.
Key Matches to Watch
The finals of the New Japan Cup are always a spectacle, but this year’s card is stacked with matches that promise to deliver unforgettable moments. Here are the key bouts to keep an eye on:
Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito
This is the dream match that every NJPW fan has been waiting for. Okada and Naito have a storied history, and their rivalry is one of the most iconic in wrestling. With both men at the top of their game, this match has all the makings of an instant classic. Will Okada continue his reign of dominance, or will Naito finally get his revenge and reclaim his spot at the top?
Shota Umino vs. Will Ospreay
The clash between youth and experience, Shota Umino and Will Ospreay represent the future of NJPW. Umino’s technical prowess and Ospreay’s high-flying offense make for a fascinating contrast, and this match could steal the show.
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
The Ace versus the Technical Wizard. Tanahashi’s heart and determination will be put to the test against Sabre’s cold, calculating style. This is a battle of wills, and the outcome could have major implications for both men’s careers.
Jeff Cobb vs. Great-O-Khan
A battle of powerhouses, Cobb and O-Khan are sure to deliver a hard-hitting, physical match. With both men looking to prove themselves, this is a must-watch bout.
Predictions and Potential Outcomes
The New Japan Cup is notoriously difficult to predict, but here are a few potential outcomes that could shape the future of NJPW:
- Kazuchika Okada wins: If Okada emerges victorious, it would solidify his status as the undisputed king of NJPW. However, it could also lead to questions about whether the promotion is relying too heavily on its established stars.
- Tetsuya Naito wins: A victory for Naito would be a feel-good moment for the fans and a testament to his resilience. It could also set up a blockbuster title match against Okada at Wrestle Kingdom.
- Shota Umino wins: A win for Umino would be a major upset, but it could also signal a changing of the guard in NJPW. With his youth and charisma, Umino has the potential to be the face of the promotion for years to come.
- Will Ospreay wins: Ospreay’s victory would be a statement that he is back and better than ever. It could also lead to a highly anticipated title match against Okada.

Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight
