AEW Battle of the Belts X: Champions Retained, Tensions Ignited

A Night of Title Fights and Rising Stakes

AEW once again delivered a night of high-octane action with Battle of the Belts X. Held on April 13th, 2024, the event was a showcase for some of the company’s most prestigious titles, featuring championship bouts and a thrilling eliminator match. Let’s delve into the results and what they mean for the future of AEW.

FTW Championship: Hook Holds Strong

The opening contest saw the FTW Championship on the line as the ever-popular Hook defended against Shane Taylor. This match was a clash of styles – Hook’s technical prowess versus Taylor’s raw power. The crowd was electric from the opening bell, fully invested in the young champion.

Hook utilized his signature suplexes and submissions to control the early portions of the match. However, Taylor, with his entourage Shane Taylor Promotions (STP) lurking at ringside, showed flashes of dominance with his signature kicks and strikes. The turning point came when Taylor attempted a devastating Clothesline from the top rope, but Hook countered with a perfectly timed German Suplex. This left Taylor vulnerable, and Hook capitalized with his patented Redrum chokehold, forcing the tap-out and retaining his title.

Post-Match Tensions: The win solidified Hook’s position as a dominant force in AEW. However, the celebration was short-lived. Post-match, Shane Taylor refused to shake Hook’s hand, displaying clear frustration and planting the seeds for a potential future rematch.

AEW International Championship Eliminator: Strong Claims Victory, O’Reilly’s Future Uncertain

The stakes were high as Roderick Strong, flanked by The Daring Young Men (Matt Taven, Mike Bennett), and the imposing Wardlow, took on the veteran Rocky Romero in an AEW International Championship Eliminator Match. This high-flying, fast-paced contest was a display of technical brilliance. Romero, known for his innovative offense, countered Strong’s strikes with dazzling counters and submissions.

The turning point came when Strong, with the help of a distraction from his entourage, delivered a devastating Sick Kick to Romero. This left Romero reeling, and Strong capitalized with a pin to secure the victory.

Post-Match Chaos: The win by Strong was overshadowed by the events that followed. Kyle O’Reilly, Strong’s former tag team partner, entered the ring to seemingly congratulate him. However, Wardlow blindsided Romero with a clothesline, igniting a brawl. O’Reilly attempted to intervene, but Strong himself delivered a flying knee to his former partner, leaving him lying and sending a clear message – their bond is fractured, and a potential rivalry may be brewing.

ROH Women’s World Championship: Athena Retains, Queen Aminata Makes a Statement

The ROH Women’s World Championship was up for grabs as Athena defended against the spirited Red Velvet. This match showcased the athleticism and resilience of both competitors. Red Velvet displayed impressive agility, countering Athena’s power moves with innovative maneuvers. However, Athena’s experience and brute strength proved too much for Red Velvet to overcome. She delivered her signature O-Face/ Eclipse Stunner combination to pin Red Velvet and retain her championship.

Post-Match Surprise: The celebration was short-lived as Queen Aminata entered the ring, seemingly out of nowhere, and attacked Athena’s tag team partner, Billie Starkz. The vicious headbutt and Air Raid Crash served as a clear message – Aminata is coming for the ROH Women’s World Championship.
