The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucible of dreams, a battleground where legends are forged, and where the underdogs rise to etch their names in the annals of professional wrestling history. On March 11th, 2025, the NJPW New Japan Cup kicks off, and the stakes have never been higher. This year’s tournament promises to be a seismic event, with a lineup of competitors ready to tear the house down, defy expectations, and chase the ultimate prize: a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
As the wrestling world turns its gaze to Japan, the anticipation is palpable. The New Japan Cup is not just a tournament; it’s a storytelling masterpiece, a month-long saga of triumph, heartbreak, and redemption. And this year, the story begins on March 11th.
In this live preview, we’ll dive deep into the tournament’s structure, the key players to watch, the potential matchups that could set the wrestling world ablaze, and the implications for the future of NJPW. So, buckle up, because the road to glory starts here.
The New Japan Cup: A Legacy of Excellence
For those unfamiliar, the New Japan Cup is NJPW’s annual single-elimination tournament, typically held in March. The winner earns the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Sakura Genesis, one of New Japan’s premier events. Over the years, the tournament has produced some of the most iconic moments in wrestling history, from shocking upsets to legendary performances.
The 2025 edition of the New Japan Cup is shaping up to be one of the most stacked tournaments in recent memory. With a mix of established veterans, rising stars, and surprise entrants, the field is wide open. Every match matters, and every competitor has a chance to make history.
The Tournament Structure: A Gauntlet of Grit and Determination
The New Japan Cup is a single-elimination tournament, meaning one loss sends you home. The brackets are typically divided into two blocks, with the winners of each block facing off in the finals. The matches are contested under standard rules, but the intensity is anything but standard.
This year’s tournament features 32 participants, doubling the size of previous editions. The expanded field means more opportunities for fresh matchups and unexpected rivalries. It also means the road to the finals will be even more grueling, testing the endurance and resilience of every competitor.
Key Players to Watch
The 2025 New Japan Cup boasts a star-studded lineup, with a mix of NJPW stalwarts, international talent, and dark horses. Here are some of the key players to keep an eye on:
1. Kazuchika Okada: The Rainmaker’s Redemption
Kazuchika Okada is synonymous with excellence in NJPW. The Rainmaker has won the New Japan Cup twice before (2013 and 2019), and he’s hungry for a third victory. After a tumultuous 2024 that saw him lose the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, Okada is on a mission to reclaim his throne. His combination of technical mastery, athleticism, and charisma makes him a perennial favorite, but the expanded field means the competition will be fiercer than ever.
2. Will Ospreay: The Aerial Assassin’s Ascent
Will Ospreay has been on a tear in recent years, solidifying his status as one of the best wrestlers in the world. The Aerial Assassin’s high-flying style and innovative offense make him a fan favorite, and his recent transition to the heavyweight division has opened up new possibilities. Ospreay has yet to win the New Japan Cup, and 2025 could be his year to shine.
3. Shota Umino: The Rising Son
Shota Umino, the son of NJPW legend Yuji Nagata, has been steadily climbing the ranks in New Japan. Known for his technical prowess and fighting spirit, Umino is a dark horse in this year’s tournament. A deep run in the New Japan Cup could catapult him into the main event scene, and Umino is ready to prove he belongs among the elite.
4. Jay White: The Switchblade’s Return
Jay White’s return to NJPW has sent shockwaves through the wrestling world. The Switchblade is one of the most cunning and ruthless competitors in the business, and his mind games are as dangerous as his in-ring skills. White has a point to prove, and the New Japan Cup is the perfect stage for him to reassert his dominance.
5. Hiroshi Tanahashi: The Ace’s Last Stand?
At 48 years old, Hiroshi Tanahashi is in the twilight of his legendary career. The Ace of NJPW has won the New Japan Cup twice before (2005 and 2008), and while his body may not be what it once was, his heart and determination remain unmatched. Tanahashi’s presence in the tournament adds an emotional layer, as fans wonder if this could be his last shot at glory.
6. Zack Sabre Jr.: The Submission Master
Zack Sabre Jr. is a technical wizard, capable of bending his opponents into pretzels with his unparalleled submission skills. Sabre has come close to winning the New Japan Cup in the past, and 2025 could be the year he finally breaks through. His unique style makes him a threat to anyone in the tournament.
7. Tetsuya Naito: Tranquilo, But Dangerous
Tetsuya Naito is the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon and one of the most popular wrestlers in NJPW. Known for his laid-back demeanor and explosive in-ring style, Naito is always a threat in the New Japan Cup. With two previous victories (2016 and 2021), Naito is looking to join an elite group of three-time winners.
8. The Dark Horses
The expanded field means there are plenty of dark horses who could make a splash in this year’s tournament. Keep an eye on Yota Tsuji, Great-O-Khan, and El Phantasmo, all of whom have the potential to pull off shocking upsets.
Potential Matchups to Watch
The beauty of the New Japan Cup lies in its unpredictability. With 32 participants, the possibilities are endless, but here are a few dream matchups that could steal the show:
- Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay: A clash of styles and generations, this matchup would pit Okada’s technical mastery against Ospreay’s high-flying innovation.
- Jay White vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi: A battle of wits and experience, with White’s cunning going up against Tanahashi’s heart and determination.
- Shota Umino vs. Tetsuya Naito: A clash of ideologies, with Umino’s fighting spirit facing off against Naito’s tranquilo philosophy.
- Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Great-O-Khan: A technical showcase, with Sabre’s submission skills going up against O-Khan’s unorthodox style.
The Stakes: What’s on the Line?
The winner of the New Japan Cup earns a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Sakura Genesis. But beyond the title opportunity, the tournament is a chance for competitors to cement their legacies, prove their worth, and create moments that will be remembered for years to come.
For Okada, it’s about reclaiming his spot at the top. For Ospreay, it’s about solidifying his status as the future of NJPW. For Tanahashi, it’s about one last hurrah. And for the dark horses, it’s about making a name for themselves on the grandest stage.
Final Thoughts: The Road to Glory Begins
The NJPW New Japan Cup 2025 is more than just a tournament—it’s a celebration of professional wrestling at its finest. On March 11th, the journey begins, and the wrestling world will be watching as 32 competitors battle for glory, pride, and a chance to etch their names in history.
Who will rise to the occasion? Who will fall short? And who will emerge victorious, earning the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship? The answers await, and the road to glory starts now.

Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight
