🏆 Match Background: The First Punjabi Prison Match

This match took place at the Great American Bash on July 23, 2006 in Indianapolis, Indiana . It was the first-ever Punjabi Prison match, originally intended to feature The Undertaker vs. The Great Khali. However, due to Khali being medically unable to compete, Theodore Long replaced him with the ECW Champion, Big Show, following a backstage attack on The Undertaker .

📜 How the Punjabi Prison Works

The match’s structure was as confusing as it was massive, consisting of two giant bamboo cages . The inner cage surrounded the ring, and a second, larger cage surrounded that one. The goal was to escape both.

The rules added to the chaos:

  • A wrestler could request a door be opened, but it would only stay open for 60 seconds before being locked again .
  • If the door closed, they were forced to try and climb over the cage walls, which were lined with sharp spikes .

🥊 The Match and Its Aftermath

The match itself was a brutal, 21-minute affair that saw both competitors bloodied .

  • Key Moments: A massive superplex from The Undertaker on the giant Big Show caused the entire cage to shake . Near the end, The Great Khali and his manager Daivari appeared, attempting to climb the outer cage to interfere .
  • The Finish: As the drama unfolded, The Undertaker leaped from the inner cage onto Big Show, who fell backward, crashing through the outer cage. This allowed The Undertaker to escape first and win the match .

In a later interview, The Undertaker himself described the match as one of his least favorites, admitting it “stunk” and that he and Big Show disagreed on the finish, although Show later admitted The Undertaker had been right .

While not considered a classic, the 2006 Punjabi Prison match remains a notable and bizarre piece of wrestling history. If you’re looking for more details on the event’s other matches or results, let me know.
