The “Unholy Wedding” between Stephanie McMahon and The Undertaker took place on the April 26, 1999 episode of Monday Night RAW. It was the dramatic culmination of a kidnapping angle that began the previous night at the Backlash pay-per-view.
The Kidnapping and the Wedding Setup
The storyline kicked into high gear at the end of the Backlash PPV, when Stephanie, waiting alone in a limousine, discovered The Undertaker was her driver. He ominously asked, “Where to, Stephanie?” as the show ended.
On the following night’s RAW, a distraught Vince McMahon was desperate to get his daughter back. The Undertaker and his Ministry of Darkness (a sinister faction that included Paul Bearer, Bradshaw, Viscera, and others) offered to return her safely—but in exchange for total control of the WWF. However, this was a trap. The Undertaker had no intention of a simple trade; he planned a dark ceremony to marry Stephanie, believing it would give him ultimate power.
The Unholy Ceremony
The segment itself was a spectacle of dark, gothic theatrics that pushed the boundaries of the Attitude Era.
- The Bride is Brought to the Ring: Stephanie, dressed in a black gown, was tied to The Undertaker’s symbol (resembling a cross) and carried to the ring by members of The Ministry.
- The Ceremony: Paul Bearer, The Undertaker’s longtime manager, acted as the minister for this “unholy wedding”.
- The Interruption: Several wrestlers, including Ken Shamrock and The Big Show, attempted to stop the ceremony, but they were quickly overwhelmed by The Ministry.
- The Rescue: Just as the wedding seemed inevitable, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin came to the ring, attacking The Undertaker and his followers. He untied Stephanie and rescued her, reuniting her with her father, Vince McMahon.
This iconic moment was a memorable part of the Attitude Era. It’s worth noting that this storyline took an even more complex turn later, when it was revealed that Vince McMahon had secretly been allied with The Undertaker all along
