NJPW New Japan Cup 2025 Live Online Preview: The Road to Glory Begins March 7th
The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucible of dreams, a battleground where legends are forged, and underdogs rise to claim their moment in the spotlight. On March 7th, 2025, the wrestling world will once again turn its eyes to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) as the New Japan Cup kicks off, promising a month of heart-stopping action, jaw-dropping upsets, and the kind of storytelling that only NJPW can deliver.
This year’s tournament is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable and electrifying in recent memory. With a mix of seasoned veterans, hungry young lions, and surprise entrants, the New Japan Cup 2025 is not just a path to championship glory—it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of professional wrestling. In this preview, we’ll dive deep into the tournament’s structure, the key competitors, the potential matchups, and why this year’s event is a must-watch for any wrestling fan.
The New Japan Cup: A Legacy of Excellence
For those new to NJPW, the New Japan Cup is an annual single-elimination tournament that has been a cornerstone of the promotion since its inception in 2005. Unlike other tournaments, the New Japan Cup is open to heavyweights and juniors alike, creating a unique dynamic where size and style collide in thrilling fashion. The winner earns the ultimate prize: a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Sakura Genesis, NJPW’s spring spectacular.
Over the years, the tournament has produced some of the most iconic moments in wrestling history. From Hiroshi Tanahashi’s emotional victories to Katsuyori Shibata’s legendary run in 2017, the New Japan Cup is where careers are defined and legacies are cemented. This year, with the landscape of NJPW in flux and new stars emerging, the stakes have never been higher.
The Tournament Structure: Chaos and Opportunity
The 2025 New Japan Cup will feature 32 competitors, double the size of the original tournament, reflecting NJPW’s growing roster and global appeal. The single-elimination format ensures that every match is do-or-die, with no room for error. One misstep, one moment of hesitation, and a wrestler’s dreams can be dashed in an instant.
The brackets are always a source of intrigue, with NJPW’s matchmakers expertly crafting potential dream matches and rivalries. Will we see a first-round clash between bitter enemies? Or will the brackets set the stage for an unlikely Cinderella story? The unpredictability is part of what makes the New Japan Cup so compelling.
Key Competitors to Watch
This year’s field is stacked with talent, from established main-eventers to rising stars looking to make their mark. Here are some of the key competitors to keep an eye on:
1. Kazuchika Okada – The Rainmaker
The reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada, is the man to beat in NJPW. While champions typically don’t compete in the New Japan Cup, rumors are swirling that Okada may enter the tournament to prove his dominance. If he does, it would be a seismic shift in the tournament’s dynamics, as every competitor would be gunning for the champ.
2. Shota Umino – The Apex Predator
Shota Umino has been on a meteoric rise since his return from excursion, and many believe 2025 could be his breakout year. With his mentor, Jon Moxley, often in his corner, Umino has the tools to go all the way. His blend of technical prowess and unrelenting aggression makes him a dark horse candidate to win the entire tournament.
3. Will Ospreay – The Aerial Assassin
Will Ospreay is no stranger to the New Japan Cup, having delivered some of the tournament’s most memorable matches in recent years. Now firmly established as one of the best wrestlers in the world, Ospreay will be looking to add a New Japan Cup victory to his already impressive resume. His high-flying style and ability to adapt to any opponent make him a perennial threat.
4. Tetsuya Naito – The Ungovernable One
Tetsuya Naito is a two-time New Japan Cup winner, and his Tranquilo persona has made him one of NJPW’s most beloved figures. However, with his career entering its twilight years, Naito knows that time is running out to add to his legacy. A deep run in this year’s tournament could set the stage for one final championship reign.
5. Great-O-Khan – The Dominator
A member of the United Empire, Great-O-Khan has been a dominant force in NJPW since his debut. With his unique blend of power and technical skill, O-Khan is a nightmare matchup for anyone in the tournament. If he can maintain his focus, he could very well find himself in the finals.
6. Yota Tsuji – The New Ace?
Yota Tsuji has been touted as the future of NJPW, and for good reason. His combination of charisma, athleticism, and in-ring skill has drawn comparisons to a young Hiroshi Tanahashi. A strong showing in the New Japan Cup could catapult Tsuji into the main event scene.
7. Zack Sabre Jr. – The Technical Wizard
Zack Sabre Jr. is a master of submission wrestling, and his ability to dismantle opponents with surgical precision makes him a formidable opponent. Sabre has come close to winning the New Japan Cup in the past, and 2025 could be the year he finally breaks through.
8. Hiroshi Tanahashi – The Ace
At 48 years old, Hiroshi Tanahashi is defying Father Time and continuing to deliver classic matches. While his best days may be behind him, Tanahashi’s heart and determination make him a threat in any tournament. A deep run would be a fitting tribute to one of NJPW’s greatest icons.
Potential Dream Matches
One of the most exciting aspects of the New Japan Cup is the potential for dream matches that might not happen under normal circumstances. Here are a few matchups fans are hoping to see:
- Kazuchika Okada vs. Shota Umino: A clash between the present and future of NJPW.
- Will Ospreay vs. Zack Sabre Jr.: A battle of styles between the high-flyer and the technician.
- Tetsuya Naito vs. Yota Tsuji: The veteran vs. the rising star, with Tsuji looking to prove he belongs in the main event.
- Great-O-Khan vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi: A test of power vs. experience.
Why You Can’t Miss the 2025 New Japan Cup
The New Japan Cup is more than just a wrestling tournament—it’s a celebration of everything that makes NJPW great. From the hard-hitting action to the emotional storytelling, this year’s event promises to be unforgettable.
For fans watching live online, the experience will be enhanced by NJPW’s world-class production, with multiple camera angles, expert commentary, and behind-the-scenes access. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to NJPW, the New Japan Cup 2025 is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the best wrestling on the planet.

Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight

Really don’t like that it’s the Women’s NXT North American Championship. Besides being an awkward mouthful, it’s too derivative of Men’s midcard title.
