The New Japan Cup: A Legacy of Excellence
Since its inception in 2005, the New Japan Cup has been a cornerstone of NJPW’s calendar. Unlike other tournaments that focus solely on championships, the New Japan Cup offers something even more tantalizing: a golden ticket. The winner earns the right to challenge for any title of their choosing, most commonly the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. This unique stipulation adds an extra layer of intrigue, as every match carries the weight of potential championship implications.
Over the years, the tournament has produced some of the most memorable moments in wrestling history. From Hiroshi Tanahashi’s dominance to Tetsuya Naito’s emotional victories, the New Japan Cup has been a stage where careers are defined and legacies are cemented. In 2025, the tournament returns with a renewed sense of purpose, as a new generation of stars looks to etch their names into the annals of NJPW history.
The 2025 Lineup: A Mix of Legends, Rising Stars, and Wildcards
This year’s New Japan Cup features a diverse and dynamic lineup, blending established legends with hungry newcomers and a few surprise entrants. The tournament’s single-elimination format ensures that every match is a high-stakes affair, with no room for error. Here’s a breakdown of some of the key competitors to watch:
1. Kazuchika Okada – The Rainmaker
The reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada, is not just a participant in this year’s tournament—he’s the man to beat. Okada’s presence adds an intriguing twist, as the champion rarely enters the New Japan Cup. However, with rumors swirling about his future and the possibility of a historic reign on the line, Okada’s participation signals that NJPW is pulling out all the stops for 2025.
2. Shota Umino – The Apex Predator
Shota Umino has been on a meteoric rise in recent years, and many believe that 2025 could be his breakout moment. With a blend of technical prowess and unrelenting intensity, Umino has all the tools to go deep in the tournament. A victory here would solidify his status as one of NJPW’s top stars.
3. Will Ospreay – The Aerial Assassin
Will Ospreay’s return to the New Japan Cup is a major storyline heading into the tournament. After a brief hiatus from NJPW, Ospreay is back with a vengeance, and his high-flying, high-impact style is sure to deliver some of the most thrilling matches of the tournament.
4. Giulia – The Queen of Strong Style
In a historic move, Giulia, one of the most dominant female wrestlers in the world, has been announced as a participant in this year’s New Japan Cup. Her inclusion marks a significant step forward for NJPW’s commitment to gender equality in wrestling, and her matches are sure to be must-see events.
5. Great-O-Khan – The Dominator
Great-O-Khan’s unique blend of power and technical skill makes him a dark horse in this year’s tournament. With his unpredictable style and unorthodox tactics, O-Khan has the potential to upset some of the tournament’s biggest names.
6. Yota Tsuji – The Future Ace
Yota Tsuji has been touted as one of NJPW’s future aces, and the New Japan Cup is the perfect stage for him to prove it. With his explosive offense and undeniable charisma, Tsuji is a strong contender to make a deep run in the tournament.
Key Storylines to Watch
The New Japan Cup is as much about storytelling as it is about in-ring action, and this year’s tournament is brimming with compelling narratives. Here are a few storylines that could define the 2025 edition:
1. Okada’s Quest for Immortality
Kazuchika Okada’s decision to enter the New Japan Cup has sent shockwaves through the wrestling world. If he wins, he could choose to challenge himself—a move that would be unprecedented in NJPW history. Alternatively, a loss could signal the end of his historic reign as IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.
2. Giulia’s Trailblazing Journey
Giulia’s participation in the New Japan Cup is a groundbreaking moment for NJPW. Her matches will be closely watched, not just for their quality, but for their potential to reshape the landscape of professional wrestling.
3. The Battle for Supremacy Between Umino and Tsuji
Shota Umino and Yota Tsuji represent the future of NJPW, and their paths are almost certain to cross in this year’s tournament. A match between these two rising stars would be a clash of styles and a glimpse into the next era of NJPW.
4. Will Ospreay’s Redemption Arc
After a tumultuous few years, Will Ospreay is looking to reclaim his spot at the top of NJPW. A strong showing in the New Japan Cup could be the first step in his journey back to the main event scene.

Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight
