Road To Glory: NJPW Heats Up for Sakura Genesis with Epic Night Two

The penultimate night of the New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Road to Sakura Genesis tour roared into Act City Hamamatsu on March 31st, 2024. With tensions escalating and championship gold on the line, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. Did the show deliver? Buckle up, because NJPW pulled out all the stops, igniting a firestorm of action that left fans breathless.

Undercard Sizzles: Setting the Stage for Chaos

The night kicked off with a dominant display by “The Great Liberator” Jeff Cobb. Shoma Kato, a rising star in the Bullet Club, was left reeling after a thunderous Tour of the Islands. This decisive victory served as a stark reminder of Cobb’s raw power and potential championship aspirations.

The Intergalactic Jet Setters, a unique alliance of Kevin Knight, KUSHIDA, and Tomohiro Ishii, continued their winning ways. Facing off against the unlikely pairing of Clark Connors and Gedo, the Jet Setters showcased their impressive aerial maneuvers and technical prowess. Ishii, the resident “Stone Pitbull,” added his signature brutal strikes to the mix, securing the pinfall victory.

The eight-man tag team encounter that followed was pure NJPW chaos at its finest. Just 5 Guys, a motley crew consisting of DOUKI, SANADA, Taichi, TAKA Michinoku, and Yuya Uemura, displayed surprising cohesion. Their unorthodox tactics and unpredictable offense proved too much for a team featuring established veterans like Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, El Desperado, Oleg Boltin, and Tomoaki Honma. The action was a whirlwind of high-flying moves, near falls, and comedic interludes, keeping the crowd thoroughly entertained.

Rivalry Renewed: Familiar Faces Collide

The pace of the show picked up considerably as Chase Owens and Taiji Ishimori of Bullet Club locked horns with Hirooki Goto and Tiger Mask. This match offered a clash of styles, with Goto’s hard-hitting strikes contrasting Ishimori’s lightning-fast kicks and Owens’ brutal brawling. Tiger Mask, ever the underdog, added a touch of aerial excitement. Ultimately, Bullet Club’s ruthless efficiency secured the win, further solidifying their dominance within the NJPW landscape.

The NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship picture became a little clearer after the following encounter. Ren Narita, SHO, and Yoshinobu Kanemaru of the House of Torture emerged victorious against a team comprised of Shota Umino, Togi Makabe, and YOH. The match was a display of bad blood and technical brilliance, with both teams showcasing their signature maneuvers. The victory for House of Torture solidified their control over the NEVER Six-Man Tag Team division but left the door open for a potential future challenge from Umino, Makabe, and YOH.

Building Towards the Big One: Stakes Rise

The tension in the building reached a fever pitch as the card progressed towards the main event. The team of BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, and Yota Tsuji, all members of Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ), took on the United Empire trio of Callum Newman, Francesco Akira, and TJP. This high-octane encounter showcased the contrasting styles within LIJ. BUSHI’s dark and menacing offense meshed seamlessly with Hiromu Takahashi’s high-flying theatrics, while Tsuji, the New Japan Cup winner, displayed his impressive technical skills. The United Empire put up a valiant fight, but LIJ’s cohesion and experience proved too much to overcome. This victory served as a significant momentum boost for Tsuji as he prepares to challenge Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Sakura Genesis.

Main Event Mayhem: A Battle for More Than Just Gold

The main event of the evening was a brutal two-out-of-three falls affair for the NJPW KOPW Championship (King of Pro-Wrestling Championship), a unique title designated for “Rural Revitalization in Hamamatsu.” Great-O-Khan, the arrogant leader of the United Empire, defended his crown against the formidable Tanga Loa of the Guerrillas of Destiny. This match was a war of attrition, with both wrestlers unleashing a relentless barrage of strikes and submissions. Great-O-Khan utilized his superior size and technical prowess, while Tanga Loa countered with his raw power and signature Pumping Bomber knee strike.
