NJPW New Japan Cup 2025 Live Preview: The Road to Glory Begins on March 14th
The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucible of dreams, a battleground where legends are forged, and underdogs rise to claim their moment in the spotlight. On March 14th, 2025, the NJPW New Japan Cup kicks off, and the wrestling world is buzzing with anticipation. This year’s tournament promises to be one of the most explosive in history, with a stacked lineup of competitors, shocking twists, and the ever-present possibility of career-defining upsets.
In this live preview, we’ll dive deep into the matchups, the stakes, and the stories that will define the opening night of the New Japan Cup 2025. From the reigning champions to the dark horses, every wrestler stepping into the ring on March 14th has something to prove. So, let’s strap in and get ready for a night of heart-stopping action, unforgettable moments, and the beginning of a journey that will culminate in one wrestler standing tall as the New Japan Cup winner.
The New Japan Cup: A Legacy of Excellence
Before we dive into the specifics of this year’s tournament, it’s important to understand the significance of the New Japan Cup. Established in 2005, this single-elimination tournament has become one of the most prestigious events in professional wrestling. Unlike other tournaments, the New Japan Cup is open to wrestlers from all weight classes, creating a unique dynamic where heavyweights clash with juniors, and powerhouses face off against technical masters.
The winner of the New Japan Cup earns more than just bragging rights—they receive a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. This added stakes transforms the tournament into a high-stakes drama, where every match could change the course of a wrestler’s career. Past winners include icons like Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, and Tetsuya Naito, and the 2025 edition promises to add another legendary name to that list.
March 14th: The Opening Night
The New Japan Cup 2025 begins on March 14th, and the card is nothing short of spectacular. The opening night features a mix of first-round matches that will set the tone for the entire tournament. Let’s break down the key matchups and what to expect from each.
1. Kazuchika Okada vs. Shota Umino
The Rainmaker. The Living Legend. Kazuchika Okada needs no introduction. As one of the most decorated wrestlers in NJPW history, Okada enters the New Japan Cup as a perennial favorite. But standing in his way is Shota Umino, the young lion who has been steadily climbing the ranks. Umino, often compared to a young Hiroshi Tanahashi, has the heart and determination to pull off an upset.
This match is a classic clash of experience versus ambition. Okada’s technical prowess and unmatched in-ring IQ make him a formidable opponent, but Umino’s hunger and relentless energy could prove to be the X-factor. Will the Rainmaker continue his dominance, or will Umino shock the world and announce himself as the future of NJPW?
2. Will Ospreay vs. Taiji Ishimori
When Will Ospreay steps into the ring, you know you’re in for a spectacle. The Aerial Assassin is known for his high-flying maneuvers and jaw-dropping athleticism. But Taiji Ishimori, the Bone Soldier, is no slouch. As one of the top juniors in NJPW, Ishimori brings speed, precision, and a ruthless edge to the table.
This match is a dream for fans of fast-paced, high-octane wrestling. Both Ospreay and Ishimori are capable of stealing the show, and their contrasting styles—Ospreay’s aerial mastery versus Ishimori’s technical brilliance—will make for an unforgettable encounter. Expect the unexpected, as both men will pull out all the stops to advance to the next round.
3. Tetsuya Naito vs. Great-O-Khan
Tranquilo. Tetsuya Naito’s laid-back demeanor belies the intensity he brings to the ring. The leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon is a fan favorite, known for his unorthodox style and ability to thrive under pressure. But Great-O-Khan is a different kind of challenge. The Dominator is a powerhouse with a unique blend of strength and technical skill.
This match is a clash of ideologies. Naito’s calm, calculated approach will be tested against Great-O-Khan’s brute force and unrelenting aggression. The question is, can Naito’s tranquilo philosophy withstand the storm that is Great-O-Khan? Or will the Dominator prove that power reigns supreme?
4. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Yota Tsuji
The Ace. Hiroshi Tanahashi is the heart and soul of NJPW. His legacy is unmatched, and his ability to connect with the audience is second to none. But Yota Tsuji is a rising star with something to prove. The young lion has been making waves in recent months, and a victory over Tanahashi would be the ultimate statement.
This match is a passing of the torch moment. Tanahashi’s experience and resilience make him a tough opponent, but Tsuji’s hunger and determination could tip the scales. Will the Ace continue to defy the odds, or will Tsuji cement his place as the next big thing in NJPW?
The Stakes: What’s on the Line?
The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a career-defining opportunity. For the veterans, it’s a chance to add another accolade to their already impressive resumes. For the younger wrestlers, it’s an opportunity to make a name for themselves and prove that they belong in the upper echelon of NJPW.
But beyond the personal glory, there’s the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship shot. The winner of the New Japan Cup will have the chance to challenge for the most prestigious title in professional wrestling. This added stakes elevates every match, as every wrestler knows that one misstep could cost them everything.
Predictions and Expectations
As we look ahead to March 14th, the excitement is palpable. The opening night of the New Japan Cup 2025 promises to deliver unforgettable moments and set the stage for an epic tournament. Here are a few predictions for the night:
- Kazuchika Okada will likely advance, but Shota Umino will push him to his limits.
- Will Ospreay and Taiji Ishimori will steal the show with a match-of-the-year candidate.
- Tetsuya Naito will overcome Great-O-Khan, but not without a brutal fight.
- Yota Tsuji will pull off the upset of the night, defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi in a hard-fought battle.
Conclusion: The Journey Begins
The New Japan Cup 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting tournaments in recent memory. With a mix of established stars and rising talent, the opening night on March 14th will set the tone for what promises to be a month of unforgettable wrestling.
So, mark your calendars, set your reminders, and get ready for a night of heart-stopping action. The road to glory begins on March 14th, and you won’t want to miss a single moment.

Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight
