NJPW New Japan Cup 2025 Live Preview: The Road to Glory Begins on March 15th
The New Japan Cup is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucible of dreams, a battleground where legends are forged, and the future of New Japan Pro-Wrestling is shaped. On March 15th, 2025, the NJPW New Japan Cup kicks off with a night of high-stakes action, emotional storytelling, and the kind of in-ring excellence that only New Japan can deliver. This year’s tournament promises to be one of the most unpredictable and thrilling in recent memory, with a stacked lineup of competitors, shocking twists, and the ever-present possibility of a new challenger emerging to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
In this live preview, we’ll dive deep into the matchups, the storylines, and the potential outcomes that could define the 2025 New Japan Cup. From the opening bell to the final showdown, this is your ultimate guide to one of the most anticipated events in the wrestling calendar.
The New Japan Cup: A Legacy of Excellence
For those new to NJPW, the New Japan Cup is an annual single-elimination tournament that has been a cornerstone of the promotion since its inception in 2005. Unlike other tournaments, the New Japan Cup is open to heavyweights and juniors alike, creating a unique dynamic where wrestlers from different weight classes and styles collide in pursuit of glory. The winner earns the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, making every match a high-stakes affair.
Over the years, the tournament has produced some of the most iconic moments in NJPW history. From Hiroshi Tanahashi’s emotional victories to Tetsuya Naito’s rise to stardom, the New Japan Cup has been a launching pad for some of the biggest names in wrestling. In 2025, the tournament returns with a renewed sense of purpose, as a new generation of stars looks to etch their names into the history books.
The 2025 Field: A Mix of Legends and Rising Stars
This year’s New Japan Cup features a diverse field of competitors, ranging from seasoned veterans to hungry young lions. The brackets are stacked with talent, and every match promises to be a must-see encounter. Here’s a breakdown of some of the key participants and what to expect from them:
1. Kazuchika Okada – The Rainmaker’s Redemption
Kazuchika Okada needs no introduction. The Rainmaker is one of the most decorated wrestlers in NJPW history, but 2024 was a challenging year for the former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. After losing the title to Shota Umino at Wrestle Kingdom 19, Okada has been on a mission to reclaim his spot at the top of the mountain. The New Japan Cup is his chance to prove that he’s still the best in the world.
Okada’s path to victory won’t be easy, as he’s likely to face stiff competition from both established stars and rising talents. But if anyone can rise to the occasion, it’s the Rainmaker. Expect Okada to deliver some of the best matches of the tournament as he fights to regain his throne.
2. Shota Umino – The Champion’s Challenge
Speaking of Shota Umino, the reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion has a target on his back. While Umino isn’t competing in the tournament, his presence looms large over every match. The winner of the New Japan Cup will earn the right to challenge Umino for the title, and the young champion knows that whoever emerges victorious will be a formidable opponent.
Umino’s rise to the top has been nothing short of meteoric, and his reign as champion has already produced several classic matches. But the New Japan Cup could introduce a new challenger who poses a unique threat to his title. Will Umino’s next opponent be a familiar foe or a shocking new contender?
3. Tetsuya Naito – Tranquilo, But Dangerous
Tetsuya Naito is a two-time New Japan Cup winner, and the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon is always a threat in any tournament. Known for his laid-back demeanor and explosive in-ring style, Naito is a fan favorite who thrives in high-pressure situations.
At 42 years old, Naito is in the twilight of his career, but he’s shown no signs of slowing down. The New Japan Cup could be his last chance to make a run at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, and you can bet that Naito will leave it all in the ring.
4. Will Ospreay – The Aerial Assassin Returns
Will Ospreay’s return to NJPW has been one of the biggest stories of 2025. After a brief stint in AEW, Ospreay is back in New Japan, and he’s more motivated than ever to prove that he’s the best wrestler in the world. The New Japan Cup is the perfect stage for Ospreay to showcase his incredible athleticism and innovative offense.
Ospreay’s matches are always must-see, and his presence in the tournament adds an extra layer of excitement. Whether he’s facing a heavyweight or a junior, Ospreay’s high-flying style and technical prowess make him a legitimate threat to win it all.
5. Zack Sabre Jr. – The Submission Master
Zack Sabre Jr. is one of the most technically gifted wrestlers in the world, and his unique style makes him a nightmare opponent for anyone in the New Japan Cup. Sabre’s ability to twist his opponents into knots and force them to tap out has earned him the nickname “The Technical Wizard,” and he’s always a dark horse in any tournament.
Sabre’s path to victory will depend on his ability to outthink and outmaneuver his opponents. If he can avoid getting caught in a high-impact match, Sabre has a real shot at winning the tournament and challenging for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
6. Shingo Takagi – The Dragon’s Fire
Shingo Takagi is a powerhouse with the speed of a junior heavyweight, and his combination of strength and agility makes him one of the most dangerous competitors in the New Japan Cup. Takagi’s matches are always hard-hitting affairs, and his never-say-die attitude has made him a fan favorite.
Takagi has come close to winning the New Japan Cup in the past, but he’s yet to claim the ultimate prize. Could 2025 be the year that The Dragon finally ascends to the top?
Key Matchups to Watch on March 15th
The opening night of the New Japan Cup is always a spectacle, and this year’s lineup is no exception. Here are some of the matches that are sure to set the tone for the rest of the tournament:
Kazuchika Okada vs. Yota Tsuji
Okada’s first-round matchup against Yota Tsuji is a clash of generations. Tsuji is one of the most promising young stars in NJPW, and his power-based style presents a unique challenge for The Rainmaker. This match could be a coming-out party for Tsuji, or it could be a reminder of why Okada is one of the greatest of all time.
Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi
This dream match between Will Ospreay and Hiromu Takahashi is guaranteed to be a show-stealer. Both men are known for their high-flying offense and willingness to take risks, and their chemistry in the ring is undeniable. This is a must-watch match for any fan of junior heavyweight wrestling.
Tetsuya Naito vs. Great-O-Khan
Naito’s first-round opponent, Great-O-Khan, is a wildcard in the tournament. The United Empire member is known for his unorthodox style and unpredictable tactics, and he’ll be looking to make a statement against the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon.
Predictions and Potential Outcomes
The New Japan Cup is notoriously difficult to predict, and that’s part of what makes it so exciting. Will we see a veteran like Okada or Naito claim victory, or will a rising star like Yota Tsuji or Shota Umino’s next challenger emerge?
One thing is certain: the 2025 New Japan Cup will be a tournament to remember. From the opening bell on March 15th to the final match, every moment will be filled with drama, excitement, and the kind of in-ring excellence that only NJPW can deliver.
Stay tuned for more updates, and don’t miss the action as the road to glory begins!
Very good show
I think his Ic run being so long hurt him as a credible world champion. It’s like he fought all the same guys and crushed them for a mid card belt now we are supposed to believe they are an actual challenge to him as a world champion? Lol when they took the intercontinental title off of him they should have moved him to SmackDown and put a new list of challengers in front of him. And moved Cody and the WWE championship to raw
Very good episode,
imagine being deluded enough to think a multi billion dollar company with guys who literally have wrestling in their blood hot shoted a heel turn storyline because they booked themselves into a corner. are you serious dude? that is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a minute lol. good luck bro.
Great episode.
Punk/Cody was there for the taking and Cena could’ve gone up against Gunther.
They knee jerked a heel turn because they booked themselves into a nepotism corner
Very good show
honestly don’t get the hate. like sure, there’s no major story here YET. But Punk/Rollins/Reigns has a lot of potential to be a high quality match. I’m legit looking forward to it and love that these three have wound up in a match together.
Great episode.
The triple threat match between them at Wrestlemania is gonna be awesome. Super stoked for this match
Great show
Let’s mention the women’s match in every live/hate challenge. Easiest task for this group of “journalists” ever. Each one of these love/hates are more embarrassing than the last. We get it, women’s wrestling is amazing and should main event every show and if a women’s match is bad it’s because where it is on the card or the booking it’s never the talent, all the women are top tier wrestlers.
Very good show
You wanna find out who the real simps and shills are? Mark down anybody who defends that main event match! Even the diehard AEW fans are crapping on that main event. It was terrible.
This Moxley stuff is stinking out the entire show and the dude seems to think he is Brock Lesnar.
The sad part is that this wasn’t a terrible show overall and with all things taken into an account. But at the end of the day, a bad ending can ruin a whole show for a lot of people. “Game of Thrones season 8” style.
Great show
So the crux of it all is that the PLE started strong…then ended with a sour belch.
The fans most remember how you left them and the fans are going to remember this show with a resounding “bleh”!
And any casual fan who watched with their buddies who are more diehard fans, may have left the viewing saying aloud, “That guy was pretty good. He should go to WWE”.
Great show.
I’ve said before but I think one of the issues here is that Tony is a massive fan of NJPW and often looks to emulate their PPV card structure. NJPW cards typically build to a climax with the big matches back to back and tend not to feature cool down matches or spots. Problem is western audiences haven’t been conditioned for that over the last 40 years, so often results in burnout. Personally I would have laid out the card like below giving breathing spaces, opening with the Steel Cage match and building to the Hollywood Ending as the main event.
Storm vs. May
Mox vs. Cope
Hangman vs. MJF
Hurt Syndicate vs. Outrunners
Takeshita vs. Omega
Swerve vs. Ricochet
Okada vs. King
Mone vs. Watanabe
Ospreay vs. Fletcher
Great episode.
Very good show, but the ending is what people remember. WWE ended Elimination Chamber with a huge heel turn. AEW ended Revolution with that abominable ending.
it doesn’t totally undo a great show, but it might have done more harm than good.
Very good show
I can already see Trips the mark statues, Trips the mark with a 20 minutes speech, the camera focusing onTrips the mark every 30 seconds when he is on the crowd.
Great show.
I’m glad they are bringing it back to a nice venue. The idea of hosting it immediately after Smackdown is insane. Why not put a highlight show or broadcast the Hall of Fame instead of airing Smackdown that week.
best of the best
Very good show tonight
