đ The First Shots: Spring 2001
The storyline began in March 2001 when Vince McMahon purchased his rival company, World Championship Wrestling (WCW) . For a few weeks, it seemed like the end of an era without any on-screen acknowledgment. That changed on May 28, 2001 when Vinceâs son, Shane McMahon, appeared on Raw claiming he had been the one to secretly buy WCW out from under his fatherâs nose .
Shaneâs “invasion force” was initially small, featuring wrestlers like Lance Storm and Mike Awesome, who would interrupt WWF matches to attack the homegrown roster .
đ Major WCW Debuts
As the spring turned to summer, bigger stars began to arrive, legitimizing the threat:
- Booker T (June 24, 2001): The five-time WCW Champion made his first major impact at the King of the Ring pay-per-view, interrupting a match to attack WWF Champion Steve Austin .
- Diamond Dallas Page (June 18, 2001): DDP made a surprise debut by stalking and attacking The Undertakerâs wife, Sara, immediately establishing himself as a sinister villain .
- Stacy Keibler (July 2, 2001): “The Weapon of Mass Destruction” brought her signature legs to the WWF. She served as the ring announcer for the WCW-branded segments, including a main event match between Booker T and Buff Bagwell .
đ The Alliance Takes Shape
The faction grew more complex when the banned Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) entered the fray. On July 9, 2001, former ECW stars Rob Van Dam and Tommy Dreamer interfered in a match, attacking WWF wrestlers Chris Jericho and Kane .
Paul Heyman, the real-life owner of ECW, appeared on the ramp to announce that he had aligned with Shane McMahon. However, the shock came when Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley revealed she was the secret owner of ECW, forming a “supergroup” known as The Alliance to destroy her fatherâs company .
đ The “Stone Cold” & Kurt Angle Dynamic
While the invasion was serious, the television leading up to the PPV was filled with hilarious backstage segments involving Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kurt Angle. Even though both were villains (heels) loyal to Vince McMahon, they engaged in a bizarre, hilarious rivalry to be the “teacherâs pet.”
One memorable segment saw a banged-up Austin strumming a guitar and singing a goofy song to Vince, while a jealous Angle tried to one-up him by doing calisthenics to prove he was healthier . In another instance, Austin gave Angle a cowboy hat, and Angle tried awkwardly to force a “howdy” catchphrase, much to Austinâs annoyance . These moments provided essential comic relief amidst the chaos.
âď¸ The Inaugural Brawl: The Main Event
The conflict culminated in the “Inaugural Brawl” on July 22, 2001, at the Invasion pay-per-view in Cleveland, Ohio . The match was a massive 5-on-5 elimination tag team bout :
Team WWF (Commissioner Vince McMahon)
- Steve Austin
- Kurt Angle
- Chris Jericho
- The Undertaker
- Kane
Team WCW/ECW (Shane McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, & Paul Heyman)
- Booker T
- Diamond Dallas Page
- Rhyno
- Bubba Ray Dudley
- D-Von Dudley
The Twist
The match was a brutal, no-disqualification war that spilled all over the arena. In the final moments, Kurt Angle locked Booker T in his devastating ankle lock submission hold in the center of the ring. Booker looked ready to tap out.
Then, the unthinkable happened. Stone Cold Steve Austin pulled the referee away, walked over to his own teammate (Angle), and blasted him with a Stone Cold Stunner .
A stunned Booker T fell on top of Angle, and Austin dragged the new referee into position to count the pinfall. Team WCW/ECW won the match, and the post-match scene showed a confused Vince McMahon watching in horror as Austin celebrated in the ringâraising the hands of Shane McMahon, Stephanie, and Paul Heyman .
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin, the biggest star in the company, had joined The Alliance.
This shocking betrayal instantly changed the landscape of the WWF, turning the “Invasion” from a nuisance into an existential threat and setting the stage for the rest of the epic summer of 2001 .
