🔥 The Undertaker vs. Edge: Hell in a Cell (Match #7)

The Story: A Year of Hatred

This match was the culmination of one of the most bitter and personal rivalries in SmackDown history, spanning over a year .

The conflict began when Edge used his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the World Heavyweight Championship from The Undertaker. Months later, Edge—disguised as a cameraman—interfered in a Hell in a Cell match between Undertaker and Batista at Survivor Series 2007, costing Undertaker the title . Undeterred, Undertaker won an Elimination Chamber match and defeated Edge at WrestleMania XXIV to reclaim the championship .

However, Edge regained the title at One Night Stand in a TLC match—a bout featuring one of the most dangerous bumps of Undertaker’s career when he was thrown off a ladder through tables . As a result of that loss, Undertaker was (kayfabe) banished from WWE by SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero .

The story took a dramatic turn when Edge was caught cheating on Vickie with wedding planner Alicia Fox. A vengeful Vickie reinstated The Undertaker and scheduled this Hell in a Cell match for SummerSlam . The message was clear: Edge would face The Deadman in his own personal hell.

The Match: TLC Inside a Cage

The match lasted 26 minutes and 43 seconds and was less a traditional Hell in a Cell match and more of a “Tables, Ladders, Chairs, and Stairs match contained within a cell” .

Early Dominance: Undertaker started by methodically punishing Edge, driving him spine-first into the cell wall and smashing him into the steel steps .

Edge’s Offensive: The Rated-R Superstar fought back by:

  • Spearing Undertaker into the steel steps
  • Bringing in multiple tables, ladders, and chairs
  • Delivering brutal chair shots
  • Climbing a ladder and driving a steel chair into Undertaker through a table

The Iconic Spots: Two moments stood above all others. First, Edge charged and speared Undertaker directly through the cell wall, causing the structure to collapse and both men to crash to the floor—a “wow moment” that left Undertaker bloodied . Seconds later, Edge climbed onto another table and speared Undertaker through the announce table .

The Turning Point: Edge attempted to mock Undertaker by performing his signature rope walk (“Old School”). The crowd booed loudly . Undertaker cut him off, crotched him on the top rope, and delivered a top-rope chokeslam through two tables .

The Finish: Undertaker showed Edge’s own ruthlessness by hitting a spear (Edge’s finisher), delivering a con-chair-to, and finally planting Edge with a Tombstone Piledriver for the pinfall victory .

The Aftermath

As Edge stirred, Undertaker wasn’t finished. He set up two ladders, launched Edge into one, climbed the other, and delivered a chokeslam from the ladder that sent Edge crashing through the ring canvas . A column of fire shot up from the hole as Undertaker posed—a visual symbol that Edge had literally been sent to hell .

Critical Reception

Bleacher Report18/20“Excellent use of weapons… one of my favorites”
Daily DDT#5 All-Time HIAC“Crazy, physical match… fun and brutal”

Critics praised the brutality and innovative spots but some noted the match relied heavily on weapons rather than psychological storytelling. TJR’s retrospective review lowered the rating to ***¾, arguing the cell became irrelevant once the wall collapsed and the TLC-style spots diluted the Hell in a Cell stipulation .

⚡ John Cena vs. Batista (Match #6)

The Story: First Time Ever

The buildup was simple but effective: John Cena vs. Batista “for the first time ever” . These were the two men who had ascended to the top of WWE in 2005—Cena as the face of Raw, Batista as the face of SmackDown. Despite both being top stars for years, they had never faced each other one-on-one on pay-per-view .

The match was presented as a dream showdown between two powerhouses, with fans genuinely split in their loyalty .

The Match: Power vs. Power

The match lasted 13 minutes and 41 seconds . Both men played to their strengths as power wrestlers, trading big moves and showing incredible resilience .

Key Moments:

  • The match built progressively, with crowd heat intensifying as it went on
  • A memorable sequence saw Cena leap off the top rope, only for Batista to catch him and counter into a powerbomb

The Injury and Finish

That powerbomb was more devastating than intended. Cena landed hard on his neck—a moment that looked brutal and, as it turned out, caused legitimate injury . The injury would require surgery and ultimately sidelined Cena for approximately three months after the event .

Despite the injury, Cena continued. Batista followed up with his signature Batista Bomb and scored the clean pinfall victory .

Significance

This was a rare clean loss for John Cena . Most fans expected Cena to win given he was younger, a better talker, and more media-friendly. Batista’s victory was a genuine surprise .

The match set the stage for their eventual feud in 2010, when Batista returned as a heel and Cena finally got his revenge .

📊 Event Legacy

SummerSlam 2008 is remembered primarily for two things:

  1. The Undertaker vs. Edge Hell in a Cell – A violent, spot-filled conclusion to one of SmackDown’s greatest rivalries, featuring unforgettable images of Edge spearing through the cell wall and Undertaker chokeslamming him through the ring .
  2. Cena vs. Batista – A dream match that delivered on its promise, despite—or perhaps partially because of—the legitimate injury that added an extra layer of realism to the contest .

The undercard also saw title changes (Glamarella unifying the Intercontinental and Women’s Championships) and CM Punk successfully defending his World Heavyweight Championship against JBL .

For fans of hardcore action and power-wrestling spectacles, SummerSlam 2008 remains a memorable chapter in WWE history.
