The second of January might seem an unconventional date for a “Best Of” show, but AEW knows how to keep us on our toes, and this event was no exception. From breathtaking high-flying action to gut-wrenching emotional payoffs, Collision 1/2/23 was a rollercoaster ride of a show that cemented itself as one of the year’s most unforgettable moments.
The opening match set the tone with a tag team clash for the ages. The Lucha Brothers, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo, squared off against the Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson. These two teams have been locked in a heated rivalry for years, and their chemistry is undeniable. The match was a whirlwind of innovative tag maneuvers, gravity-defying leaps, and near falls that had the crowd roaring with every exchange. In the end, the Lucha Brothers emerged victorious, their signature Destroyer finisher putting the Bucks away and further solidifying their place as one of the most dominant tag teams in AEW history.
From aerial acrobatics to brutal brawling, Collision 1/2/23 had something for everyone. Britt Baker, the reigning AEW Women’s Champion, defended her title against the ever-resilient Thunder Rosa. This was a brutal back-and-forth affair, showcasing the grit and determination of both women. Baker, the polished technician, used her ring smarts and vicious submissions to wear down Rosa. But the “Thunder From Texas” wouldn’t be denied, powering through the pain with her signature lariats and suplexes. The match reached a fever pitch when Rosa locked Baker in the Texas Cloverleaf, a submission that has earned her countless victories. But Baker, ever the opportunist, managed to reach the ropes, forcing the break. The action spilled outside the ring, and in the ensuing chaos, Baker capitalized with a Curb Stomp on the exposed concrete. With Rosa reeling, Baker rolled her back into the ring and delivered a punishing piledriver, retaining her championship in a hard-fought victory.
The emotional core of the night came in the form of two highly-anticipated singles matches. The first saw Bryan Danielson, the “American Dragon,” face off against “Hangman” Adam Page. This was a clash of styles and ideologies, with Danielson’s technical brilliance pitted against Page’s raw power and never-say-die attitude. These two titans have been locked in a brutal feud for months, and their previous encounters have been nothing short of legendary. This time was no different. The match was a symphony of destruction, with weapons galore and no rules to hold them back. Chairs, tables, barbed wire, and even a flaming table all made an appearance, each adding to the mayhem and increasing the sense of danger. Omega, ever the showman, incorporated high-flying maneuvers into the chaos, while Moxley unleashed his trademark aggression with brutal lariats and suplexes. The match reached its climax when Moxley trapped Omega in a Paradigm Shift on a bed of barbed wire. Omega, battered and bruised, somehow managed to escape and counter with a One Winged Angel on the exposed concrete. The crowd erupted as both men lay motionless, the outcome hanging in the balance. In the end, it was Moxley who emerged victorious, his hand raised high as the confetti rained down. He had overcome incredible odds to defeat his nemesis and cement his place as one of AEW’s most dominant stars.
